Hyderabad: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to agree to any proposal to grant UT status for Hyderabad in the event of division of the State.

Asaduddin in his memorandum said that the proposal to convert Hyderabad as a Union Territory (UT) was not logical as it had no geographical contiguity with the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh. He suggested that Khairatabad mandal be made a temporary working capital of the residuary state after the bifurcation.

During his 30-minute meeting with Singh, the MIM leader also opposed the proposal to keep Hyderabad as a joint capital with powers over law and order, land revenue, urban administration, education and healthcare vested in the union government. He urged the Centre to decide the capital city for the residuary state and include it in the AP Reorganization Bill, and also create separate high court for the new state.

In wake of growing concerns over the safety of minorities and Dalits in Telangana State, Asaduddin informed the Prime minister that Congress would not get any benefit from dividing the state. Instead, the BJP would gain political advantage.

Appealing to Singh to adhere strictly to the procedures enshrined in the Constitution during the bifurcation of state, he said security and safety of Seemandhra people in Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, was also a major concern. The Centre had the responsibility to address all the issues raised by Seemandhra people including their employment and protection of their assets in Hyderabad and Telangana districts, he said.

Owaisi earlier met Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday. He represented to her his demand that Hyderabad should not get any UT status. Apparently, Sonia Gandhi was understood to have conceded his demand, which emboldened him to take up the issue with the Prime Minister.

Since Owaisi’s MIM is a close ally of the Congress-led UPA, observers feel that his opinion would have a bearing on the status of Hyderabad in Telangana Statehood Bill.
