Rajahmundry: The district machinery on Saturday released details of preliminary damage caused by ‘Helen’ cyclone in East Godavarit. The estimates of officials show that three of the 10 deaths have been caused by the calamity. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The total number of houses damaged is 153. Standing paddy in 1.17 lakh hectares and crop on sheaves in 36,488 hectares has been inundated. The horticulture crop loss has been put at Rs 21 crore---61,500 trees, banana plantations (3,420 hectares) and vegetables (148 hectares).

About 24 boats have been lost and 233 boats damaged in the cyclone. Thirty-nine 39 kv sub-stations, 33 kv feeders, 11 kv 33 poles, fifteen 11 kv feeders, 559 11 kv poles, 89 km of low tension line, 566 LT poles have been damaged. Power failure occurred in 755 villages. Supply to 140 villages has been restored. Nine milch animals have been lost. Over 150 roads (Panchayati Raj) and 211 km R & B roads have been breached. Road surface of R & B department of 2.6 km has been affected. Over 520 trees have been uprooted. Six rural water schemes have been hit. Twenty-four primary and community health centers have developed breaches. Meanwhile, farmers in Konaseema are crying foul over the estimates. They wonder how officials could get the figures without visiting a village. They faulted officials for allegedly preparing the estimates sitting in offices.

Stranded fishers return safely

Narsapur: After horrifying battle for life in rough sea for about six days, as many as 28 stranded fishermen returned safely to the shore at Narsapur in West Godavari district on Saturday.

They ventured into the sea at Antarvedi in East Godavari district and had stuck there as the sea turned turbulent under the influence of Cyclone Helen.
