Hyderabad: Unorganised labourers from 118 groups in Telangana region have resolved to put pressure on the political leadership of Telangana as they feel that the Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act of 2008 was not being implemented even after five years of its enactment.

Telangana Federation of Trade Unions (TFTU) celebrated its fourth foundation day at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram here on Tuesday. Unorganised labour force from across 10 districts of Telangana gathered to celebrate the achievements of TFTU and to decide their future course of action.

TRS MLA Harish Rao, who addressing the gathering, came down heavily on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Minister for Labour Danam Nagender for not implementing the Act.

He felt that the workers availing of MNREGA benefits were better off than the unorganised workers. He questioned why the CM had not appointed a welfare board for every group of the 118 unorganised sectors.

Harish Rao alleged that for six months the files for sanctioning budget for SC/ST and BC and other corporations had been pending with the CM office. He wondered when the money would go to districts and when it would reach the banks, and finally the beneficiaries.

He stated that Telangana region could develop only under the leadership of TRS Chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.

BJP state leader Bandaru Dattatreya said that the government was not releasing a single penny out of the Rs 1000 crore, which was collected as CESS from constructions, which was supposed to be spent for the welfare of the construction workers.

Dattatreya said that neither ex-gratia for victims of accidents nor pensions or ESIs was given to the workers. He reminded that it was during his tenure as the Union Minister for Urban Development that 20 lakh houses were built as part of Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojna. He also stressed the need for issuing ID cards to unorganised workers as enshrined in the Act.

HMTV’s senior journalist Virahat Ali said that the workers should demand that the government meet their basic human needs. “Harish Rao is the only leader who responds to the tears shed by the workers,” he said.

TFTU state president Kamalla Ilaiah said that the workers who were involved their caste professions were now losing their crafts and joining the unorganised sector as rickshaw pullers and farm workers.

“From here on, TFTU would address KCR as Fidel Castro of Telangana and Harish Rao as the Che Guevara of Telangana,” he declared.
