TDP chief lambasts Kiran for ignoring plight of people, especially farmers

Vijayawada: Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday castigated Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for not helping the people who were hit by the series of cyclones and floods.

Speaking to media persons, Naidu came down heavily on the Chief Minister for not visiting the cyclone-hit areas and for merely directing the officials to take up relief, rehabilitation works. He further said that the officials have not visited the villages for the on-the-spot assessment of damage caused to the people, particularly the farmers due to the cyclones and floods.

The former Chief Minister said that the State government had failed to assess the damage caused by the cyclones. He said that the government had claimed Rs 3,000 crore loss due to Neelam, Rs 1,000 crore loss due to Phailin, Rs 6,500 crore loss due to rains and Rs 1700 crore due to Helen cyclone.

He said the government’s assessment was totally wrong and lacked the ground-level visits by the officials. He criticised the government for not extending the crop insurance, though it was collecting insurance premium from the farmers. He blamed the State and the Central governments for not pressing the government agencies like Food Corporation of India (FCI), the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Markfed and other agencies to purchase the damaged crops. He said that his government had issued a GO in 2003 to buy damaged and discoloured paddy and other crops and help the farmers. However, the present government was not implementing the GO to help the farmers, he said, and wondered why the Chief Minister was not taking any interest in helping the farmers. He alleged that both the State and the Central Congress leaders were busy dividing the people, rather than helping the victims of natural calamities. Chandrababu Naidu said that the State had faced several cyclones and wondered why the Central government had not declared them as national calamities. He also found fault with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Central Ministers and others for not visiting the cyclone and subsequent flood-hit areas of the State.
