Hyderabad: While the GoM is working out on the nitty-gritty of status of Hyderabad and transfer of certain villages of Bhadrachalam to East Godavari, the Union Minsiter of State for Finance, J D Seelam, met his colleague S Jaipal Reddy late on Wednesday night to seek his support for making Hyderabad as Union Territory at least for a short period.

This meeting assumes importance since Telangana leaders, whether it is from the Congress, TRS or BJP, including Jaipal Reddy, have been firmly opposing any move to alter the status of Hyderabad.

According to Seelam, he had tried to explain to Jaipal Reddy why he was pitching for Hyderabad as the Union Territory on the lines of Delhi with a Legislative Assembly. He said he wanted Hyderabad to be UT for a very short period, for five or six years, during which the residuary State would develop its own capital.

He said he had told Reddy that according UT status to Hyderabad would satisfy a majority of the Seemandhra people. Seelam is of the view that giving UT status would help in creating a conducive environment when the Telangana Bill would be taken up for discussion in the State Assembly.

He said he also sought the cooperation of Reddy for transfer of 37 villages in Bhadrachalam division so that the long-pending Polavaram project can be completed without any problem. The temple can remain with Telangana, he added.

When asked about the response from Jaipal Reddy, he said that the former was a statesman.
