Lehar weakens into depression, makes the landfall without destruction

Hyderabad: Cyclonic storm Lehar, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast on Thursday evening, weakened into a depression. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) withdrew the cyclone warning much to the relief of the people in five of the nine coastal districts which feared devastation.

The Met Office has forecast rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam district of Puducherry (geographically a part of Andhra) till Friday. Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls would also occur over Telangana during the next 36 hours.

However, the officials continue the ban on the fishermen going into the sea for the next 24 hours and said that they would review the situation only after Friday noon. The officials have also decided to continue the rehabilitation camps for the next 24 hours keeping in view the depression. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams which were deployed heavily keeping in view the initial severity of the storm continue to remain in their position along the coast guarding the people in the low-lying areas and along the coast. The withdrawal of the cyclone warning came in as a sigh of relief for the state administration. The cyclone made the landfall sans major ravage.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy expressed happiness at a review meeting he had with officials on the cyclone on Thursday. The officials informed him that the cyclone weakened further while crossing the coast.

He complimented the administration, NDRF, Army, Navy and Air Force and the public for extending their cooperation in relief measures. He asked the officials to speed up estimation of losses to crops and properties caused by recent cyclone Helen.
