Tirupati: As many as 103 smugglers, accused in the brutal murder of two Forest department officials, were produced in the Fifth Additional Junior Civil Judge Court,here, on Tuesday. Magistrate D Nagavenkatalakshmi sent them to judicial remand till December 31.

According to police, the smugglers were arrested on Monday afternoon during combing, by both police and Forest personnel in the Seshachalam Ranges, and searches in various places down the hills. Deputy Forest Ranger NR Sridhar, Assistant Beat Officer David Karunakaran were killed by the smugglers in the forest on Sunday. The arrested include the prime accused Govindarajulu, Cevadan Kali and Ramaswamy Madan, alleged ‘notorious’ smugglers from Kallamuru village, in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.

Police said the arrested smugglers were charged under sections 147,148,341, 302, 307, 332, 333 and 120 B of the IPC. The other 100 arrested were wood cutters, labourers and beneficiaries engaged in cutting, shifting and transporting the precious red sander logs.

They hailed from various places in Vellore and Tiruvannamali districts of Tamil Nadu. Cases against the arrested smugglers were registered in Renigunta police station. Police enquiries reveal that about 300 people, involved in the smuggling of red sanders, were present during the attack.

The 103 accused were taken to Kadapa for lodging them in the Central Prison, amid tight security by a big contingent of 200 policemen. Meanwhile, the Forest department personal resumed combing on Tuesday, after a day’s gap to pay homage to the two officials, resulting in nabbing of 28 more suspects, allegedly involved in the fatal attack.

Chittoor DFO Srinivasulu received ten Muscat 410-type guns, sanctioned by the State Government, following Sunday’s attack by the red sander smugglers, killing two forest officials.
An armed police party, with 20 personnel, is ready to assist the combing operations by the Forest guards against the smugglers in the Seshachalam forest.
