Anantapur: The demand for keeping the State united echoed at a public meeting attended by President Pranab Mukherjee here, when Primary Education Minister S Sailajanath urged him to ensure that it was not divided. He appealed to the President to respect the sentiments of the majority of Telugu people.

Amid loud cheers by the audience, Sailajanath told Pranab that he was the hope of Telugu people.

He made the appeal in his speech at the concluding programme of the birth centenary celebrations of former President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy.

Sailajanath, who heads the Group of Ministers and Congress leaders from Seemandhra opposing the bifurcation, met the President and submitted a memorandum. He said the interests of Telugus could be protected only if the State remained united.

Meanwhile, police arrested several S K University students as they were planning to take out a rally to meet the President and submit a memorandum to oppose the proposed bifurcation. They were denied permission.

Elaborate security arrangements were made here in view of the protests planned by students and other groups. Hundreds of policemen were deployed around the Sanjeeva Reddy Stadium, where the President attended the meeting.

Revenue Minister N Raghuveera Reddy said united Andhra activists could meet the President in Hyderabad, where he is on southern sojourn.

In a related development, the Chief Minister's Office termed a media report as 'baseless' that N Kiran Kumar Reddy discussed the Telangana issue with the President during his meeting on Sunday. It clarified that it was only a courtesy call.
