International Migrants Day observed

Hyderabad: Creation of a separate Ministry in Andhra Pradesh, similar to that in Kerala Government, would be the most effective way to address the issues related to Gulf migrants, felt the speakers at a meeting held on International Migrants Day on Monday.

Domestic Workers Welfare Trust and Migrants Rights Council organised the meeting at Basheerbagh Press Club to address the issues related to Gulf migrants.

The speakers suggested the creation of a separate Ministry to address the issues. They demanded monitoring of the entire process of migration to Gulf countries, including rehabilitation of those affected by Nitaqat Law and other causes for deportation of the migrants back to India should be addressed by the Ministry. They further urged the State government to grant an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the families of those migrants who die in Gulf countries.

The importance of emigrating through registered overseas placement agents was stressed, so that the migrants could have a safe and informed migration.

The awareness of RTI Act of 2005, among the victims of Gulf migration was also suggested.

Sister Lissy Joseph, Founder, Domestic Workers Movement in India, Anuradha, Advocate in Dubai, Vijaya Laxmi, President, AP State Domestic Workers Union, Srinivas, Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Chittibabu, AP NRI Cell, Bala Gangadhar Rao, RTI resource person and others participated took part in the programme.
