Hyderabad: Four workers of a rubber factory located at Gaganpahad, here, were charred to death in a fire accident that struck around 4 am on Thursday. After nearly a three-hour fight the fire was brought under control by a lone fire tender at around 7 am.

The deceased, identified as Sandeep, Jaikishan, Naval Yadav and Jogender Chaudhary, belonged to Bihar.

According to police, the fire at Akshita Rubber Factory could be the result of a leakage from a pipeline supplying hot liquid chemical in one of the rooms. The flames quickly spread to the adjacent rooms on the factory premises. It is said that the four victims, whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition, were sleeping in one of the rooms.

ACP Shamshabad J Bhadreshwar said that due to fire the stock of rubber got melted and some of it fell on the workers burning them alive. Many workers who escaped unhurt called for help immediately. Meanwhile, trade unions staged a protest in front of the rubber factory demanding that the management pay Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the families of each of the victim. As the factory owner Kailash Agarwal agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of the each victim, the trade unions called off their protest. The police took the factory owner into custody for questioning. Violation of safety norms by the factory management has not been ruled out.

Local MLA Prakash Goud and other leaders visited the spot and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
