Hyderabad: The Information Technology (IT) Department on Monday launched a software for availing SMS service in Telugu. The Official Language Commission Chairman Mandali Buddha Prasad received the first Telugu SMS message from Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Lakshmaiah, who inaugurated the project- Telugu Vijayam- as part of the special initiative of the AP Society for Knowledge Networks (APSKN). The SMS service, Telugu Maata, was made in four months and was considered for membership by the Apple.

The software, designed by APSKN, a wing of the IT department, would be compatible with mobile handsets, smart phones and tabs including i-Pad enabled with Android and i-Phone operating systems, IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said.

He claimed it was for the first time in the country an SMS service was available in a regional language. Lakshmaiah added that the software was designed for compatibility with unicode font, so that there would be no issues with services being offered by mobile network operators.

He said that the project would enhance the scope for employment to Telugu people.

The software has already been made available on www.teluguvijayam.org. On downloading the software, Telugu Maata, virtual keyboard would be installed on the devices. It will allow the user to type in Telugu on phone or other devices, wherein Telugu letters will be released by single key strokes. All characters will be accommodated in two layers unlike other apps. He said that about five crore cell phones being used by eight crore Telugu people and the Telugu language usage could be promoted further if the cell phone users used the Telugu in cell messages.

Referring to the internet international summit resolutions, he said that the summit adopted 18 resolutions and the project of Telugu Vijayam completed 11 resolutions so far.
