Chirala (Prakasam): Engineer Bathula Ankamma Rao who was abducted in Chiran district of Assam on December 22 by the Bodo militants became a free man at around 4 am on Tuesday. The militants set him free at the same spot from where he was taken hostage. Describing the kidnap, he said the militants had taken him on a two-wheeler. Later he was blindfolded and made to walk. Rao said that he had explained the status of his family to the militants. Initially, they had promised to free him on Monday night, but changed the day to Tuesday.

His wife, Vani, and family members expressed happiness over the release. She described his safe release as a ‘New Year gift’ to the family. “The last ten days were like hell for the family members,” Vani remarked. She stated that Rao had telephoned her to convey the news of his release, saying that he was still in Assam. He was likely to reach the town on Wednesday.
