Hyderabad: Many colonies in the city on Wednesday welcomed the New Year with unscheduled power cuts. They had to face power outage for at least one or two hours.

Officials claimed that power cuts had become inevitable due to sudden rise in the consumption of energy on Tuesday on account of New Year celebrations and overhauling of the transformers that had been taken up ahead of the summer season, which would begin from February.

The authorities of Central Power Distribution Company of AP (APCPDCL) said that the power demand jumped suddenly from Tuesday night because of the New Year revelry which continued till Wednesday morning. The demand in the Greater Hyderabad region suddenly went up to 1,700mw on Tuesday from 1,600 mw a day earlier, while the allocated power for the city was only 1,550mw. The officials said that as part of load shedding, power cut was imposed in many areas including Dilsukhnagar, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Santosh Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and parts of Old City for one to two hours.

In some parts of the Hitec City, Uppal, Ghatkesar and Miyapur divisions, power supply came to a halt for one hour as the APCPDCL took out repair works of the transformers. It was a routine practice to shut down the transformers for maintenance to prevent technical snags in the supply of power during summer months, officials said. Last year, the increased power demand in summer had put heavy load on transformers resulting in technical problems and frequent outage. The officials also said the demand for power would start increasing under the APCPDCL limits in the ensuing Rabi season, and this could force the authorities to impose official power cuts from the last week of January in Greater Hyderabad limits.

According to sources, Discom was planning to impose at least one hour power cut in the beginning of the summer and three hours during peak season from April.
