Hyderabad: The New Year has brought good news for thousands of employees working in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). At last, their dream of owning a small piece of land in the State capital is going become a reality, thanks to the untiring efforts of the recognised trade union, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union (GHMEU).

The State government has zeroed in on 200 acres of land in survey numbers-935, 943, 946, 947, 953, 954, 955 and 958 under possession of the Metropolitan Development Authority in Shamirpet Mandal on city outskirts for this purpose.

The State government on December 26 issued a memo bearing number 47674 directing Ranga Reddy Collector to look into this issue and take necessary action. Copies were also sent to the Special Chief Secretary and the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA) and Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development.

Giving details, GHMEU chief U Gopal expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister M Maheedhar Reddy. He stated that he made an earnest appeal to Kiran Reddy to fulfill the long-pending demand of the civic staff who strives hard every day for giving a clean and green look to the big city. The GHMEU is planning to divide this land into plots of 100 sq. yards each and allot it to over 6,000 employees.

Gopal informed that they even approached Shamirpet Mandal Tahsildar who had assured the union of expediting all clearances once he received the file from the authorities.

While the market rate of the land was around Rs 58 lakh per acre, the State government had come forward to allot the said land at one-fourth of the market price to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Welfare Co-operative Housing Society. However, the union was making efforts with the ministry to ensure they get some more reduction in the price.
