  • Sends resignation letter through personal secretary
  • Hurt by the way CM stripped him of legislative affairs
  • Senior Congress leaders’ efforts to pacify him fail
  • T members may create ruckus in House over the issue

Hyderabad: Notwithstanding efforts made by senior Ministers and AICC observer R C Khuntia to persuade him not to resign following divestment of the legislative affairs portfolio from him, D Sridhar Babu late on Thursday night sent his letter of resignation through his personal secretary to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Sridhar Babu had been contemplating to put in his papers since Tuesday, when Kiran Kumar Reddy took a far-reaching decision, but he was prevailed upon by senior Ministers like K Jana Reddy. He has been upset over the manner in which Kiran had stripped him of the portfolio. The Minister took a decision after holding a meeting with his supporters on Thursday evening.

The minister wanted to fax his resignation to the Chief Minister. But senior ministers like Jana Reddy and others asked him not to take any hasty step. Jana Reddy on Thursday met the AICC observer R C Khuntia who came to Hyderabad on Thursday morning to participate in a programme organised by Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao in Amangal in Mahabubnagar district, and discussed the issue with him. Jana Reddy is learnt to have told Khuntia that though the change of portfolio was the prerogative of Chief Minister, the timing and the manner in which it had been done was not correct.

Later, Khuntia telephoned Sridhar Babu and asked him to meet him. Sridhar Babu called on Khuntia and said that he was aware that change of portfolio was the prerogative of the Chief Minister, but he was only objecting to the manner in which it had been done. The Minister said that if Chief Minister had called him and informed him of his decision, he would not have protested. “The manner in which I was divested of the portfolio amid the Assembly session was unnecessary," Sridhar Babu is quoted to have told Khuntia.

But the AICC observer tried to persuade him not to fax his resignation letter, and wait till the issue was sorted out. Khuntia then asked Sridhar Babu and Jana Reddy to accompany him to Amangal and participate in the Indiramma Vijayam bus yatra to thank Sonia Gandhi for taking a decision to carve T state. He was said to have consulted the party leaders in New Delhi to dissuade the minister from resigning. The AICC observer told the media that the T Congress leaders were unhappy at what they felt was a unilateral decision to change the portfolio.
