Hyderabad: Four of the six Rebel Congress MPs from Seemandhra region who had served a notice for no-confidence motion on the UPA government recently launched a two-day Sankalpa Deeksha at Indira Park here on Friday, demanding that the Centre stop the process of division of the State.
The MPs who participated in the Deeksha are Lagadapati Rajagopal, GV Harsha Kumar and Sabbam Hari and Rayapati Sambasiva Rao. Vundavalli Arun Kumar could not come as he was unwell and another MP Sai Pratap also failed to turn up at the dharna chowk.
When asked about this, Rajagopal said that they had sent letters, expressing their solidarity with the Deeksha and could not attend due to health problems. He said, “We are all united and no one need have any doubt about it.” He recalled how the number of six MPs who had first moved the no-confidence had swelled to over 70. The Deeksha, the MPs claim, is not only to draw the attention of New Delhi to keep the state united but also to mount pressure on all Seemandhra Congress MLAs and MLCs to insist and see that a resolution in favour of Samaikyandhra be moved during the present session of the Assembly. The hunger strike of the three MPs will continue on Saturday also.
Addressing the gathering, the MPs said, “This Deeksha is only a beginning. This is to create a sense of resoluteness among the representatives of Seemadhra region to fight till the end. We would announce the next course of action after January 23, when the deadline to send back the draft T Bill would come to an end,” Sabbam Hari said.
Interestingly, the MPs during their speeches did not utter a single word against their top leader Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi. They criticised the UPA government, which took the decision to bring in the Telangana Bill. They said a state cannot be divided by bulldozing the aspirations of more than 70 percent of its people. Sabbam Hari blamed the Congress for the mess saying that the party would be routed if it goes ahead with its decision to carve T state.
Rayapati Sambasiva Rao expressed deep disappointment that their leadership had not taken their opinion into consideration. “There is no guarantee that the party would win even in Telangana after the bifurcation. I don’t understand for whose sake the statehood is granted”, he said.
Mild commotion
There was a mild commotion for a while as a student from TVPS raised Jai Telangana slogan while Rayapati was speaking. Police immediately swung into action and whisked him away. Earlier, a group of students from Osmania University tried to barge into the area but the Rapid Action force stationed there blocked them and sent them to a nearby police station. Apart from Rajya Sabha member K V P Ramachandra Rao, Ministers Vatti Vasanth Kumar, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, K Parthasaradhi, Pithani Satyanarayana, Erasu Pratap Reddy, and Galla Aruna Kumari visited them and expressed their solidarity with them.
Several Seemandhra Congress MLAs like JC Diwakar Reddy and Gade Venkata Reddy also called on the fasting MPs and backed their effort to mount pressure on the Centre.
