Hyderabad: The kin of the Palem bus fire accident victims met Transport Minister Botcha Satyanarayana on Monday and lodged their protest against the helpless attitude of the State government towards their woes.
The relatives, who have been fighting for compensation and other benefits under the banner ‘Aarani Mantalu’ for the last 68 days, met the minister and held a long meeting with him.
Convenor of Palem Bus Fire Accident Victims JAC Sudhakar, Tollywood actor Shivaji and others put forth three demands that included arrest of the bus owner, an ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh and government job to each family and seizure of buses that do not have permission.
Botcha said he could not take a decision on the ex gratia and job, but promised to write to the Chief Minister on the same.
“There is no precedence in history of such a demand,” he said.
The minister asked the DGP to find out the status of the investigation. He reiterated that action on private operators, running their buses as stage carriers while holding contract carriage permits, was on.
Tollywood actor Shivaji demanded the State government take responsibility and provide jobs to the relatives of the victims and pay Rs 25 lakh ex gratia to each
Meanwhile, relatives of the accident victims said if a positive decision was not taken by Sankranti they would go on an indefinite strike.
Relatives to continue fight
K Aruna from Nellore has been waging a lone battle and running from pillar to post to see to it that the bus owner is arrested and the department strengthens its fleet of buses. She lost her daughter Ramya, 26, son-in-law Rajesh, 32, and 2-year-old grand-daughter Riddhima in the accident. She said, “They were to go back in December to the US. Their papers were ready. The driver was on double duty.
The accident would not have happened if the authorities were strict.” G B Pratima, who lost her husband Harish, said that he was coming to Hyderabad as their three-month-old child was undergoing a surgery. “The death has been a sudden blow. I am devastated,” she said. Another relative, G Bhaskar, who owns a kirana store in the city and lost his brother-in-law K Vadapati in the accident, said, “I have been running around for the last two months. Vedapati was just 27 and was working in Deutsche Bank in Bengaluru. He was coming to spend Diwali with us.”
