Rajahmundry: Uneasy tension prevailed right from Tuesday morning following high drama when rumours spread that the President of State Sarpanches Federation, Padala Venkata Rama Reddy (Ramu) was kidnapped in broad daylight.

Venkata Rama Reddy has been waging war against the proposed 100-MW thermal power plant of KPR Industries (India) Ltd, a fertilizer unit between Dontamuru of Rangampeta mandal and Balabhadrapuram of Biccavolu mandal in East Godavari district.

The tension was palpable. It eased to an extent when the police subsequently clarified that Padala Ramu was detained under the Preventive Detention Act and sent to Rajahmundry Central Prison. According to eyewitnesses, police dressed in plainclothes came in private vehicles and picked him up from Komari Palem village in East Godavari district before frisking him away to an unknown destination. The villagers and his family members feared that Ramu could have been kidnapped by vested interests who were upset because of his relentless fight against the proposed power plant. As the rumour spread like wildfire, locals from Dontamuru, Balabhadrapuram and Komari Palem descended at Balabhadra Puram.

Noticing the panic, the police informed Ramu’s family members, and also the media, that he was, in fact, arrested under the PD Act. The huge gathering immediately staged rasta-roko and continued it for four hours following which a large number of police personnel were deployed at the scene.

The agitating people demanded action against the police personnel who came in civil clothes and picked up Ramu. They alleged that the vehicles they had used belonged to KPR Industries. They also wondered why Ramu was arrested when he had committed no wrong.

Ramachandra Puram DSP Ravindranath held talks with the family members and villagers and assured to initiate action against anyone found guilty of foul play. It may be recalled that Padala Ramu took part in protracted war against KPR industries. Tension mounted during the recent public hearing taken up by the district collector as villagers had openly revolted. Speaking to The Hans India, Suneetha, Ramu’s wife, charged that the police had arrested him illegally.

She demanded action against Anaparthi CI Naga Mohan Reddy for not informing family members about the arrest and for creating panic among the villagers. Meanwhile, Ramachandra Puram DSP Ravindranath clarified said that everything was done within the parameters of law.
