Tirupati: In a major breakthrough, police on Tuesday caught notorious red sander smuggler, Dwaraka, the alleged kingpin in the smuggling network operating in Chittoor district.
In a swift joint operation, forest and police personnel, working on a tip-off, trapped the smuggler along with 11 others. They recovered Rs 50 lakh worth red sanders from them in Yerravaripalem.
The 12 detained included red sander smugglers and those allegedly hand-in-glove with them in the illegal operation. They were whisked away to an undisclosed highly-guarded place for interrogation.
Dwaraka’s arrest created a flutter in the district because of canards that he was closely associated with a top politician, whose patronage he enjoyed.
Police, though, are tight-lipped over the entire operation even as forest officials conceded that `some smugglers' were taken into custody but refused to divulge further details.
Meanwhile, sources said pressure is being mounted on the authorities seeking Dwaraka’s release.
Interestingly, he is being seen as the bone of contention between two powerful political groups in the district.
The forest and police officials, sandwiched between the divergent forces pulling in different directions, remained perplexed and are undecided on how to go about with their prized catch.
