Protests by devotees on Ekadasi at Tirumala

Tirumala: Following widespread criticism by all sections of the society, including political parties, religious leaders and even its employees, the TTD has withdrawn the cases slapped on devotees for staging protests in front of its chairman’s office at Tirumala.

The TTD action was widely criticized as ‘vindictive’. Stung by it, the TTD management hurriedly decided to take back complaints within 24 hours of filing them with police atop the hill. TTD Executive Officer M G Gopal on Thursday disclosed their decision to the media. He, however, strongly defended the filing of complaints on grounds that organising protests at Tirumala violates the norms and regulations on the seven hills. He warned that the TTD would not brook such acts in the future. Even Tirupati urban police SP Rajasekhara Babu echoed the same view, justifying cases against the devotees.

It may be recalled that a large number of devotees broke open the gates of queue compartments and rushed into the temple for darshan. Some others staged a protest before the TTD chairman’s office on January 12, after they could not get the Rs 300 darshan tickets; they claimed they were assured by trust board members including the chairman.

However, TTD reacted only three days later and filed complaints against `unidentified devotees' at Tirumala Two Town police station on Wednesday.
