Karimnagar/Akiveedu: In shocking incidents, a youth committed suicide, by jumping off a police station, while another has injured himself seriously in a suicide attempt at another police station.

Sana Chandraiah alias Chandu, suspected of being involved in a bank robbery case, allegedly jumped to death from the second floor of the Korutla police station in Karimnagar district on Sunday night. He was a resident of Buggaram village in Dharmapuri mandal In the other incident at Akiveedu police station in West Godavari district, a person in custody allegedly attempted suicide on Monday by cutting his hands and abdomen. Bollam Edukondalu, who was found heavily bleeding, alleged that he was being kept in the lock-up for the last five days.

Chandu had been kept at the Korutla police station since Saturday. Police officials took a serious note of the incident and ordered a probe into it. Victim’s relatives attribute the death to police harassment. Chandu’s parents and relatives contend that although he was not involved in the robbery, he was beaten up in the name of investigation. It is not clear whether he tried to escape or wanted to commit suicide.

He took the fatal jump after scaling the building’s second floor, even as police were watching in horror. After he fell to the ground serious injuries only did they act and rush him to the district hospital here. He died around midnight.

Police claim that they had recovered 1.5 kg gold stolen on December 24 from Dharmapuri Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society Bank, at the instance of Chandraiah, who was the main suspect. An amount of Rs 2 lakh was also stolen from the bank.

Police claimed that the youth was scared that he would not be able to escape punishment for his involvement in the robbery case.

Hence, he resorted to suicide, after allegedly pushing aside some police personnel. Superintendent of Police P Shiva Kumar told the media that an inquiry would be conducted into the ‘suicide.’ He said departmental action would also be taken against police if their dereliction of duty was proved.

At Akiveedu police station, Edukondalu said he had come to the station on January 16 to lodge a complaint of assault, after being attacked when he intervened in a fight between Bollam Durga Rao and Nimmala Nagu at Gummuluru Centre. Rao had allegedly caused injuries to Nagu with a beer bottle.

Edukondalu claimed that SI Ravikumar did not even allow him to meet his relatives. He alleged that Sanghika Nyaya Vedika convener D V Ramanamurty, the counsel of Nagu, was harassing him in collusion with the SI; he held out threats of confining him indefinitely. Out of fear, he resorted to the suicide attempt.

However, SI claimed that Edukondalu was arrested on Monday and that his injuries were caused by the victim brushing his hands to a wall. He denied, subjecting him to any harassment. However, those in police lock-up confirmed that Edukondalu was kept there on Thursday itself.
