Hyderabad: There are no human rights in war-torn Syria, only violations, remarked KC Reddy, IPS, former chief security advisor, UNSMIS (United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria).

Speaking at a special lecture on ‘Dynamics of Syrian Conflict: Human Rights Violations’ jointly organised by Centre for Human Rights and Centre for Human Security Studies of University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Thursday, he said the Syrian war was one of the worst ongoing human disasters.

In a lecture that was attended by students and faculty of UoH, KC Reddy recounted his experience in Syria and described it as, “No day has passed without shelling and bombarding, in the morning at least 100 people were found dead and hundreds injured.” He remarked that though the Syrian crisis looked as a struggle between ruling Alawites and Free Syrian Army (comprised mostly Sunnis) on the papers, the interests of regional players like Israel, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq were making it even worse.

He also said that lack of unanimity among members of the Security Council had been prolonging the issue. “I have never seen a conflict as dreadful as this which is prolonging for more than three years,” he said. He lamented that with both the parties hurling allegations at Geneva 2 conference, a solution was not in sight. Revisiting the socio-cultural factors of the conflict, Reddy said that Syria, once called the cradle of civilization, was now a graveyard of humanity.

“Human Rights violations are done by both the parties, if the ruling Alawites (Al Assad govt) are involved in forced disappearance, indiscriminate arrests, aerial strikes, torture etc., the rebel Free Syrian Army is indulging in public hanging, ransom killing etc. In the wake of all these the economy has melt down,” Reddy added. He said that about 5,38,000 had taken refuge in Lebanon, 5,67,000 in Jordan, 5,40,000 in Turkey, 2,07,000 in Iraq and 1,29,000 in Egypt. There were 6.5 million who were internally displaced.
