Board issues 1,000 tokens on day one

Tirupati: Several of those residing at Tirupati and Tirumala had free darshan of the Lord when the TTD authorities issued 1000 tokens to the extent on an experimental basis on Tuesday.

In what is seen as a first in recent years, the Board made the special arrangement that has been welcomed by devotees, who said it was happening after a gap of 30 years. They were allowed into the vaikuntam queue complex from 8 am onwards.

The free ‘darshan’ for locals is being welcomed as it comes as a breather from the rigid measures by way of restrictions on them. Simultaneously, their demand for a once-a-week darshan became more vocal. As a result, Joint Executive Officer Srinivas Raju was urged to consider extending the facility and submit a report. He issued 1,000 tokens in the first phase of free darshan programme, with the Aadhaar card as the basis.
