Hyderabad: Alarmed by the increased consumption of power in the current Rabi season, the power utilities are resorting to unscheduled power cuts on domestic sector and the unofficial load shedding is depriving supply ranging from five to 10 hours across the State, including Greater Hyderabad limits.

The seven-hour free power supply to farming sector in the Rabi season has put the DISCOMS under pressure. The demand for power had increased abnormally in the last one week as the supply had been resumed for nearly 30 lakh pumpsets in the State. Telangana region, which has the highest number of pumpsets, has been facing more power cuts when compared to other regions of the State. The APCPDCL (Central Power Distribution Company Limited) which covers Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts imposed power outage for at least eight hours in the districts.

The APNPDCL covering Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad and Adilabad put the unscheduled power cuts for 10 hours in the day time.

The APSPDCL covering Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor and Kadapa, and APEPDCL covering Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and East and West Godavari districts imposed five to six hours power cuts to provide power to farming in the day time.

The AP Transco officials said that the demand for power has been increased to 280 mu (million units) from the present 250 mu per day. The utilities have the capacity to supply only 240 mu because the hydel power generation in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar was stopped with the depleting water levels in the reservoirs.

The officials said that depending on the availability of power in each power utility, power cuts were imposed for at least five hours in municipalities, eight hours in mandal headquarters and 10 hours in villages. The sudden increase in power demand during day times forced the utilities to impose power cuts in all districts where the agricultural activity was in full swing. Most of the villages, which fall under Greater Hyderabad limits, were also not exempted from load shedding. Power cuts have been imposed for three to four hours in these villages. The Transco officials said that the unscheduled power cuts will continue till the end of the Rabi season that ends in March.
