The strike by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) contract employees was called off on Wednesday. It was after detailed discussions that took place between the employees’ unions, officials from the Urban Local Body (ULB) and M Maheedhar Reddy, minister for municipal administration and urban development.

The minister has announced that the salary of all the contract employees would be increased from Rs 6,500 to Rs 8,500. Having one of their demand partially addressed, the employees’ unions decided to call off the strike and resume their duties from Thursday onwards.

Udhari Gopal, president, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees’ Union (GHMEU) said, “We are pleased with the hike. Our salaries have been hiked after a long gap.”

As of now the salary for an outsourced employee stands at Rs 8500, but the original demand was for Rs 16,500.

In this regard, M Mohan Reddy, working president, AP GHMC Staff and Workers Union says, “We are glad that at least this much has happened. But, considering the cost of living in Hyderabad, this meagre amount of salary is not enough.”

In case of other Corporations and Municipalities, the minister has agreed to enhance the wages of the outsourcing workers from Rs 6,700 per month to Rs 8,300 per month. For Nagara Panchayats, wages of outsourcing workers has been hiked from Rs 6,700/- per month to Rs 7,300/- per month.
