Blames it on lack of control over contractors

Hyderabad: Some 21 irrigation projects out of 72 incomplete irrigation projects were listed as ‘cost overrun’ projects, according to the Comptroller & Audit General. In its report, CAG said that the amount of ‘cost overrun’ of these 21 projects touched Rs 57,427 crore.

Pranahita-Chevella was topping the list with a cost overrun of Rs 20,625 crore as against the original cost of Rs 17,875 crore. The Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar Tail Pond Project ranked second in the list with a cost overrun of Rs 10,591 crore against the estimated cost of Rs 8,930 crore. Indira Sagar Polavaram cost got escalated to Rs 5,859 crore against Rs 10,151 crore. The cost of GNSS Phase one and two shot up by Rs 5,143 crore as against the original cost of Rs 3,777 crore.

Likewise, the Telugu Ganga project’s cost rose to Rs 3,795 crore as against the original cost of Rs 637 crore. CAG said that the government delayed the projects due to lack of control on the contractors. The officials had not followed the standard procedures in calculating the cost escalation. The cost overrun irrigation projects included Pushkaram, Tadipudi Venkatanagaram, Madduvalasa, Bhupathipalem, Somasila, Somasila- Swarnamukhi canal, HNSS, Pulivendula Branch Canal SLBC Tunnel on Udayasamudram, SRSP Flood Flow channel and Komaram Bheem projects.
