Hyderabad: Engineering challenges notwithstanding, the Hyderabad Metro Rail project is moving ahead with great speed.

Changing the structural design at certain locations, innovating at strategic points by not altering the existing structures, the Hyderabad Metro Rail project is, nevertheless, moving on.

The latest engineering challenge is the loose soil at the proposed Bharat Nagar metro station. To tackle the problem, pile foundation is being done where digging goes on for 12 hours continuously till 60 feet is reached which is followed by another 10 hours of filling concrete. “The pile rig is a modern marvel and the rock cutting machine has 24 bullet teeth that can cut the hardest rock. As the area has loose soil we need to dig 17 metres to make the foundation strong,” said NVS Reddy, MD, HMR.

Bharat Nagar was a centre for vegetable market. Vegetable vendors would be accommodated in 26,000 s ft area. The station would be known as a Rythu Bazaar station. It would be convenient for commuters to shop and move on, headed.

Reddy along with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) officials inspected Bharat Nagar to Moosapet stretch in stage 2 of Corridor 1 on Saturday.

The Bharat Nagar to Moosapet stretch was beset with problems such as sewer lines, electrical lines and open nalas right in the middle of the road.

“Detour from the religious structures, construction of underground drains and demolition of 100 out of 292 properties between Kukatpally and Bharat Nagar have made it possible to continue with the work,” said an HMR official.

The works were completed at a cost of Rs 4.69 crore. In the stretch between Bharat Nagar and Moosapet the remaining 300 metres of barricade work would commence next week.

As part of the social responsibility, special facilities for women and youth are being planned at Madhura Nagar metro station and Yousufguda.
