BJP to insist on lifting suspension of MPs

Surely, I would be the first to argue that such a far- reaching Bill should be discussed in Parliament, should be debated and should not be pushed through in a cacophony when protests of a violent nature are taking place- Union Minister Jairam Ramesh

Hyderabad: The T issue continues to take new turns and twists, and each leader, whether from the state or from the Centre, is making statements, thereby further confounding the situation. On one hand, signals are emanating from the government that the T Bill will be passed during the current session of Parliament, and on the other, BJP continues to reiterate support to the T Bill, but says it will insist on lifting of suspension of the 16 MPs.

Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh joined the issue on Sunday, sending some confusing signals during a debate on CNN-IBN.

Jairam advocated that such a Bill which has far-reaching implications should not be passed in a cacophony and amidst protests which were violent in nature. Speaking to CNN-IBN's Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate, which was telecast on Sunday, he was asked whether it was essential that there should be a proper division of votes on the Bill, and if so, whether the government would reconsider and pull back the Bill because a “sensible” debate was not possible under the present circumstances.

Jairam expressed his personal view and belief that the Bill was a very important piece of legislation and must be debated and discussed and should not be pushed through in a din.

“Surely, I would be the first to argue that such a far- reaching Bill should be discussed in Parliament, should be debated and should not be pushed through in a cacophony when protests of a violent nature are taking place. I spoke to the Home Minister yesterday. He said that the Bill has been introduced. There are differing views on it,” he said. “Kiran Kumar Reddy has not been loyal to Congress party and crossed the Lakshman Rekha, I am sorry that but it is true” said Jairam.

When asked what strategy the government would adopt, he said that he cannot say what the government strategy was going to be. “The Prime Minister and the Congress President, the Home Minister and the Parliamentary Affairs Minister will take a call and decide about it, he added.
