Hyderabad: Ten of the 50 leading pharmaceutical companies in the United States belong to India and 40 per cent of the medicines consumed by the United States are exported from India.

These statistics were revealed at a National Symposium SynchroPharma 2014 – Pharma Rendezvous for Better Health Care, held at Sultan Ul Uloom College of Pharmacy here on Saturday.

Delivering the keynote address Dr Ahmed Kamal, project director, NIPER, said, “India could be the Pharmacy of the World by 2020.”

Union minister D Purandeswari pointed out that Indian pharmaceutical market could grow to about $74-75 billion by 2020 with its current rate of 14-17 per cent groeth.

“Medicine must be affordable, available and accessible to consumers at all levels. The Pharmaceutical industry in India is growing fast,” she stated. Speaking about the fast changing global market Dr GV Prasad, chairman & CEO, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, said after Information technology, pharma industry would be the most successful sector.

The young population of India gives the country’s pharmaceutical industry a competitive edge against the United States, China and Japan. He called upon the students to connect academia with the industry and explore knowledge beyond text books. He emphasised the changing trends of medicine in technology, including 3D printer synthetic body parts, personalised medicine and effective use of technology to address the challenging medical needs.

Dr Khan Lateef Khan, chairman, Sultan ul Uloom Education Society (SUES), Zafar Javeed, Hon secretary, SUES, Dr Mir Akbar Ali Khan, Treasurer, SUES, Mohammed Waliullah were present on the occasion.
