Hyderabad: As part of the relocation of animals back into the forests, Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) would be releasing Mouse Deer into the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Mallikarjuna Rao, Director, NZP said, “In 2010 we had six mouse deer, now the number has risen to 61. The animals would be released in a phased manner between March and August.” An enclosure would be created in the forest and the mouse deer would be monitored for a period of five months and later would be released into the deep forest area, he added.

According to Mallikarjuna Rao, a core and sub-committee are formed to look into the issues regarding the release of the deer into the wild.

An expert committee on Mouse Deer Conservation Breeding met at NZP here on Saturday. The NZP would be working with scientists from Laboratory for Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) and genetic profiling of the animals would be done. The animals would be let into areas where mouse deer population has reduced. The expert committee headed by the Member Secretary, Central Zoo Authority (CZA), New Delhi; B S Bonal, AV Joseph, PCCF (Wild life) & Chief wildlife warden, AP; Mallikarjuna Rao, Addl PCCF / Director of Zoological Park; BNN Murthy, Curator, NZP; and curators of Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and scientists from LaCONES attended the meeting.
