Appeals to President not to alter Telangana geography

Hyderabad: TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday shot a protest letter to President Pranab Mukherjee against the ordinance to transfer seven mandals of Bhadrachalam to the successor state of Andhra Pradesh.

Rao, in his letter, said this decision would have deleterious implications on the Constitution apart from affecting the tribals whose villages would be submerged under Polavaram project. It would also reduce energy share for Telangana, he said.

The TRS president said that the historic Bill was formulated after most extensive deliberations in the Cabinet, by the Group of Ministers, the State Assembly and finally by both Houses of Parliament before receiving the President’s assent on March 1.

But within 24 hours, the Centre brought in an ordinance seeking to alter the boundaries of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as contained in the AP Reorganisation Bill 2014 without referring it to the State legislature, for their views as mandated by Article 3 of the Constitution.

He said the ordinance also hurt the people of T region as it took away 450mw hydro power stations at lower Sileru, which was not going to be submerged at all. Referring to the Polavaram project, Rao said the project would submerge areas in Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. A large number of people including tribals in all the three States would require relief and rehabilitation package. But in the name of tribals, a huge swathe of geography covering seven mandals had been excised from Telangana.
