Visakhapatnam: Director General of Police (DGP) B Prasada Rao said it would be a big challenge for the State police machinery to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of elections to the Assembly, Lok Sabha and local bodies.

He said that controlling threats from Maoists, anti-social elements and other trouble-mongers would be a real challenge but they were geared up for the task.

Prasada Rao was speaking after inaugurating the 47th AP Police Sports and Games Meet-2014 here on Wednesday.

He admitted that the extremists of Andhra Odisha Border Special Zone Committee (AOBSZC) are active in Visakhapatnam district and along Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) and the Special Action Teams to be formed by the Maoists, who could try to disrupt the election process.

Despite the call given by the Maoists for boycott of all elections, the police are taking all precautionary measures to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls and the electorate could exercise their franchise freely even in the Maoist pockets, he reiterated.

Meanwhile, he dismissed allegations that irregularities had occurred in DSP promotions. He that a special committee had prepared the list of contenders.
