Hyderabad: Acting swiftly on the orders of the Governor for probing irregularities in the conduct of the Post Graduate Medical Entrance Test (AP PGMET), the sleuths of CID registered a case and conducted searches at the examination wing as well as the office of the registrar of the NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) and a printing press in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

They zeroed in on some 25 students, mostly top-rankers in the test, for questioning in connection with the scandal, and seized some documents and computers. They listed out some 100 students for questioning in connection with the scandal, and seized some documents and computers on Tuesday. Raids were also conducted a printing press as part of the investigation. S Babu Lal, the registrar, whose role is under scrutiny, and his deputy were reportedly grilled by the CID officials.

Reports of the scandal got credence with the police unearthing a Bengaluru connection in the question paper leak of the PGMET conducted on March 2.

Police said that question papers were leaked and sold by a gang operating from Bengaluru to a select few for sums ranging from Rs 60 lakh to 2 crore.

A person named Jagdeep who was involved in the Chandigarh scam is allegedly involved in the PGMET scam and the investigating team is learnt to have rounded him up.

According to AP Junior Doctor Association (JUDA) president Kranti Kumar, the scam is the handiwork of the same set of students who were involved in Chandigarh PG entrance test scam. “One of them who is currently pursuing his MBBS. He is among the toppers in the PG examination. He has been taken into police custody,” he said.

"Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case and the submissions of the investigating officer (IO), further custodial interrogation of the accused is required to unearth the entire conspiracy and to recover the amount involved ," said the CID officials.
