Hyderabad Roads Have Inadequate Legroom To Walk. As many as 1,500 accidents have been recorded in Hyderabad alone from the state in the last year due to the reported lack of proper road infrastructure, zebra or pelican crossings, footbridges, under passes or skywalks even at prominent junctions.

Hyderabad: As many as 1,500 accidents have been recorded in Hyderabad alone from the state in the last year due to the reported lack of proper road infrastructure, zebra or pelican crossings, footbridges, under passes or skywalks even at prominent junctions. A recently concluded study has revealed the fact that 52% of those who lose their lives in Hyderabad in the road accidents are the pedestrians.

Now, taking the pedestrians off the road, therefore, has become a big question to be answered. It is not possible to implement the rules in Hyderabad similar to the case of Bengaluru, the city which has made walking on the road, an offence, last year; and 826 people were penalised with fines between Rs 500-Rs 1,000.

While addressing the media, Syam Sunder, DCP, Traffic II, said that the pedestrians alone are not to be blamed till there was enough infrastructure. He said that there has been no law as such imposed against jaywalking in Hyderabad. He pointed out that as part of the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System, pedestrian signals at important junctions will facilitate safe crossing of roads. While this is so, a veer of projects to help pedestrians are either incomplete or unused.

The skywalk project at the Secunderabad railway station has been still pending over a period of time. The skywalk between Rathifile bus station and the Secunderabad railway station was proposed to decrease jamming.

Reportedly, Hyderabad roads have the insufficient space for the pedestrians, which is the lowest for any city in the world.
