The cost of the mural fish has sky-rocketed at the Gangaputra Sangam in Musheerabad and Begum Bazar wholesale fish markets due to Mrigasira Karthi festival. The fish is also exclusively preferred by Bathini brothers for administering their medicine to cure asthma patients.

On non-peak days, the cost of mural from Rs 350 to Rs 400 per kg. On festival day, the fish is being sold for anywhere between Rs 500 and Rs 600 per kg.

But the price is not a deterrent as people still consume fish on the occasion. Mrigasira Karthi is one of the famous festivals which is celebrated in the city. The festival is also known as ‘Mrugam’ and is celebrated every year in June to mark the onset of monsoon. People believe that eating fish, especially Mural species (Korra Meenu), on the day of Mrigasira is good for health and cure respiratory diseases and ensures prosperity.
