She was addressing judicial officers, members of the Visakhapatnam Bar Association, students of Dr B R Ambedkar College of Law, Andhra University and the elite at a seminar on ‘Crimes against women--causes, solutions’ organized jointly by AU and the bar association here on Saturday. Pointing out that crimes against women amount to a violation of the very basic rights of women, she said time has come to analyse the root cause, without limiting the solutions to just holding meetings.
The judge observed that ‘there is a rise in crimes against women in the post-globalization period, as most of educated women come out for jobs at odd hours. The male-dominated society is not accepting the socio-economic growth of women due to ego problem’.

‘Lack of respect for women in society, lack of proper education, indiscriminate consumption of alcohol and exposure to pornography by youths’ are attributed as main reasons for such crimes, she said. Referring to the gang-rape of a medico in Delhi in December 2011, she was informed that there were no adequate facilities in forensic labs.

High court judge Justice R Subhash Reddy said crimes against women were rising despite many amendments to acts. He noted that AP has surpassed the national average in sexual harassment. The judge observed that the main reason for the abnormal delay in redressing family court issues was 90 per cent of advocates were not ready to deal with such cases and preferring adjournments. He appealed to the Vizag Bar members to step up the family court proceedings at the earliest.
Andhra University VC Prof G S N Raju attributed illiteracy and behavioural attitude as the main reasons for crimes against women. Later, the Delhi CJ was felicitated by members of the bar association and faculty of AU Law College.
