Hyderabad: Cash-starved Andhra Pradesh government got a shot in arm as the Centre has given permission to auction 4,000 tonnes of red sanders through global tenders in the first phase.

Red sanders have huge demand in the international market. By auctioning them the Andhra Pradesh government will get about Rs 1,000 crore initially.

At a press conference on Monday, state Forest Minister Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy said red sanders is widely grown in Chittoor, Kadapa and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh but its sale is controlled by the Centre. In the last few years the Centre did not clear sale of red sanders, though there is huge demand in China and other overseas market, resulting in illegal export. This had given rise to wide network smuggling gangs which thrived all these years and has posed a major law and order problem in Chittoor and other districts. The Minister said over 8,500 tonnes of seized red sanders is readily available for sale in the international market. Based on the State government's request, the Centre permitted sale of 4,000 tonnes in the first phase.

According to forest department each ton of red sanders commands a price of Rs 25 lakh in the international market. The State government would soon seek Centre's nod for disposal of remaining stock after a few months, the Minister said.
