Hyderabad: The AP government has proposed that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) should be located at Guntur. Ahead of the visit of the central team next week, the State government has constituted a committee, headed by Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Kamineni Srinivas, to visit Guntur and identify a right place for setting up the institute.

Speaking to the media here, the Minister said a team led by him would be visiting Guntur on Thursday. The team would prepare a detailed report on the advantages of setting up the hospital in Guntur. He said the government was planning to set up the hospital at a strategic place to ensure that it is accessible to l the people spread across 13 districts of the State.

The location of the institute should be chosen to see that it has good rail, road and air connectivity. The estimated cost of the hospital would be Rs 1200 crore and the Centre has already allocated Rs 125 crore as first instalment for the current financial year, The Minister said this would be the first step towards achieving major reforms in health sector.
