Hyderabad: Justice Ramesh Ranganathan of the High Court at Hyderabad on Wednesday directed the Nellore police to respond to a writ petition filed by YSR Congress Party complaining that the police may arrest them in false cases.

The judge was dealing with a writ petition filed by B Anil Kumar and 22 others ZPTC members of the YSR Congress Party. The petitioners complained that the TDP may misuse its power and direct the police to arrest them in order to prevent them from casting their votes in the elections scheduled for July 20.

P Sudhakar Reddy, counsel for the petitioners, informed the court that some police personnel in plain clothes had tried to abduct him at Banjara Hills area of the city on Tuesday night, but could not succeed due to resistance put up by the local people and a police complaint was lodged at the Banjara Hills Police Station.

The judge suggested to the petitioners' counsel that the Nellore district Superintendent of Police may be impleaded as a respondent. Further hearing was adjourned to July 18. In a similar writ petition, Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar of the High Court at Hyderabad adjourned a writ petition filed by another ZPTC member of the YSR Congress Party, seeking directions to the police not to arrest him.

The judge was dealing with a writ petition filed by B Raghavendra Reddy. The petitioner prayed the court to stay his arrest in a criminal case registered against him at Kavali rural police station till completion of elections to the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts. The judge adjourned the case to Thursday.
