Hyderabad: As building a new capital will take a long time, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said that there was a need to have a temporary capital if the state was to move forward on the path of development.

Accordingly it has been decided that Vijayawada should be the temporary capital of Andhra Pradesh till the main capital city was built. Naidu is learnt to have proposed that most of the heads of departments should move to Vijayawada by month end so that they could be available close to the people belonging to all regions.

According to the minister for Information and Public Relations, Palle Raghunadha Reddy, the chief minister has asked the officials to immediately find built-up area of 1.2 lakh square feet with all the facilities so that the heads of department can function from there.

The minister said three buildings had been shortlisted where the administration could be housed temporarily. Medha Towers in the hi-tech city located at Gannavaram might as well turn out to be the official complex for the temporary capital. The L&T Hitech City Limited, a joint venture of the L&T Infocity and the Andhra Pradesh State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (APIIC), constructed the Hitech City on the 30-acre site at Gannavaram at an outlay of Rs 450 crore.
