Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leadership is pinning its hopes on the Nandigama by-election to make some difference to the residual AP’s current political scene.

After being decimated in the 2014 general elections, Congress leaders are now hoping for a win, so that their voice will be heard in the AP State Assembly.

In the run-up to the Assembly Budget session, there was a talk that Congress and Opposition party YSRCP have reached an understanding to the effect that YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s party would take on the TDP-led government in the Assembly and Congress in Council. But nothing of that sort has happened and the AP Legislative sessions were adjourned sine die on Saturday.

Still, Congress realised that the even a handful of leaders can make a difference when it comes to Legislative sessions. Congress members led by C Ramachandraiah were able to take on the government in the Legislative Council.

According to reports from Nandigama, APCC chief N Raghuveera Reddy campaigned for the party candidate Bodapati Babu Rao and addressed a meeting of farmers and DWCRA (Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas) women. He lambasted the Chandrababu government for reneging on its promises to waive off agricultural and DWCRA loans.

According to Congress sources, the party is of the thinking that as it would be difficult for Chandrababu to meet the promises and people would come out of their “misplaced faith” in the TDP supremo sooner or later.
