Vijayawada: Unauthorised layouts are springing up under the very nose of the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA), but authorities, for reasons best known to them, are turning a blind eye to the menace. Unscrupulous real estate brokers are trying to hoodwink the people into buying unauthorised plots.

A section of real estate brokers have resorted to the ploy with demand for house plots rising abnormally in the backdrop of the government decision to locate the State capital in the vicinity of Vijayawada.

Though VGTMUDA was established in 1979, it can’t boast of any major achievement, except building Amaravathi Township under public private participation (PPP) and a truck terminal at Ibrahimpatnam. Ironically, the officials are unable to renovate their own office building, though foundation stone was laid in 2013.

When it comes to unauthorised layouts, VGTMUDA authorities have thrown up their hands. When contacted Vice-chairman Usha Kumari said “We will investigate into illegal layouts, if any, if it is brought to our notice.”

City Planner Ashok Kumar, too, concurred with her saying “our duty is to examine plans and approve them.” Whether the State government at least now will focus attention on the illegality is a moot question.
