Govt turns deaf ear to the longstanding demand for a university in Prakasam district

Ongole: The Prakasam district which earned worldwide fame for its natural resources, is the only district in Andhra Pradesh without a university. Of the 13 districts in the State, only Prakasam district does not have a university or a national institute. Though Prakasam students were bagging top ranks in various academic and competitive exams, the TDP government turned a deaf ear to their plea for the university.

Political leaders speak a lot about the backwardness of Prakasam district but they had done nothing to develop the district. Earlier, they assured a mining university and central educational institutions but the name of the district was not found in the list prepared to be submitted to the central government for the establishment of national educational institutions and universities. Even mining university, proposed by a minister from the district, did not find place in the list.

Barring Prakasam, universities were established in all other districts of the State. In some of the districts there are more than two universities. Educationists and students in the district were disappointed as none of the proposed 11 central educational institutions was allocated for the district.

More than one university is present in Visakhapatnam, Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapuram, Krishna and east Godavari districts. There are five universities each in Visakhapatnam and Chittoor districts and the government has decided to establish another two educational institutions each in both the districts. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) were proposed in Chittoor district. The government proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Visakhapatnam, Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Kurnool, Central University in Anantapuram, National Institute of Technology (NIT) for West Godavari and showed an empty hand to Prakasam district. In 2008, universities were not allocated only to Prakasam and Vizianagaram districts but recently Tribal University was sanctioned for Vizianagaram.

Educationists and students in Prakasam district were angry over the government’s apathy.
