Proposals for conversion of state highways into national highways have been long pending

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state governments seem to be vying with each other to get Central nod for the long-pending conversion of the state highways into national highways in two respective States.

While the AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has already plunged into action seeking the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' immediate intervention, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao entrusted the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MPs to lobby strongly with the Centre for getting approvals for highway conversion proposals submitted to the Centre in 2012 by the erstwhile AP government.

Sources said that under the new highway projects in Telangana, it was proposed to upgrade state highway into national highway on 141 Km stretch between Sanga Reddy- Nanded- Ankola, 108 km between Nirmal – Khanapur- Laxettipet, 132 km from Hyderabad – Bijapur via Moinabad, Chevella, Manneguda and Kodandgal. The total stretch to be covered in Telagnana is 381 km.

In AP, it was proposed to upgrade state highways on the stretch of 964 km into national highways. It include 353 km stretch between Krishnapatnam Port- Atmakur, Badwel, Mydukur, Proddutur and Gutti, 74 km stretch between Anantapur- Raichur raod, 108 km along Kakinada - Dwarampur – Rajamundry - Kovvur, Janga Reddyguda- Khammam, 238 km along Visakhapatnam- Tellapalem – Narsipatnam – Chintapalli – Sileru - Eguva Sileru - Tada, Srikalahasti - Renigunta and 133 km between Penugonda- Madakashira and 58 Km from Rayachoti via Chinnagudem to Gurramkonda.

It may be recalled that the previous UPA government did not give its consent to the proposals after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which is the final authority for the approval, received strong objections from Telangana MPs. The MPs argued that the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy's government accorded top priority to Seemandhra and showed discrimination towards Telangana in the conversion of highways. Telangana MPs also warned the CCEA not to approve the project until changes were done in favour of Telangana. Finally the CCEA was forced to stop giving its approval.

Sources said the AP and the Telangana governments were desperate to get the Central nod for the new highway projects in view of increasing burden on the maintenance of the state highways. Once, the proposals are approved, the officials said the new highways would also pave way for the promotion of industrial and investment corridors in future.
