Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam MP Kambhampati Haribabu has said the Passport Seva Kendras in Vijayawada and Tirupati would be brought under the purview of the Regional Passport Office in Visakhapatnam. Apart from it, the headquarters of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) headquarters for the 13 districts in new Andhra Pradesh will also be located in Visakhapatnam, he said here on Tuesday.

Participating in a programme on ‘North Andhra Development Plan’ organised by Uttarandhra Journalists’ Front (UJF) at Visakhapatnam Public Library, Mr Haribabu said he had brought the matter to the attention of the Central government. The authorities had accepted his proposal on the location of the headquarters of the DGFT in Visakhapatnam.

He had impressed upon Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitaraman to locate the State headquarters of DGFT in Visakhapatnam in view of existence of a major port in the city.

Mr Haribabu said there was no other place in India or abroad comparable to Andhra Pradesh with a 1,000-km coastline, four-lane roads, main railway line, four ports and four airports, several rivers like Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra, Vamsadhara, Nagavali, Jhanjhavati, Penna, Sarada and Thandava, besides rich minerals and natural resources.

He also said more ports could be built in the private sector as was the case with Gangavaram Port in Visakhapatnam city. At the same time, he said it was incumbent upon the government to ensure that the livelihood of the fishermen in the vicinity of new ports was not deprived of.

The MP said as much as 6,000 acres each in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts could be brought under irrigation by digging distribution channels to carry water from Thotapalli reservoir.

Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof. GSN Raju said a tribal university was being set up in Vizianagaram. On Information and Technology (IT) promotion, he said this sector alone was not enough and there should be manufacturing industries in electronics, computer hardware and hospitality management to generate employment.
