Rajahmundry: People and district machinery of East Godavari on Sunday heaved a sigh of relief as severe cyclone ‘Hudhud’ did not cause much damage in the East Godavari district.

Though strong gales up to 50 kmph triggered panic in Konapapa Peta and Uppada areas and in Thondangi mandal, not much destruction was witnessed.

The beach road between Uppada and Kakinada ripped up due to storm surge. Trees were uprooted and roads suffered damage in several parts of the district.

Power lines were cut off in the MRO as well as the MDO offices in Y Ramavaram as trees fell down. A worker, Moshey, died as a steel rod hit him when he was on duty to restore snapped power lines at Ramachandra Puram. As many as 100 villages were without electricity as nine 33 kv sub-station and 12/11 kv sub-stations tripped in the district.

Vakalapudi road near Kakinada was eroded and Kotananduru-Narsipatnam road was blocked by fallen trees.

The railways have provided 16 coaches in Tuni and 15 coaches at Samalkota for sheltering people.

Trees were uprooted and roads were blocked in Tondangi mandal in the East Godavari district. Project Officer of the ITDA Gandham Chandrudu told The Hans India that NDRF team stationed in Tondangi was pressed into service for restoration works. Food was being provided to about 7,000 people in the mandal. In Amalapuram division, about 4,000 people, who were moved to relief camps were being provided with milk, food and medicines and the officials have decided to keep the evacuees in relief camps till tomorrow.
