Visakhapatnam: Cyclone Hudhud has left the Kursura Submarine Museum in a poor shape, forcing its closure. Never before in its 13-year history did the museum remain closed for so long. Every Monday it is shut for maintenance. Following the severe cyclone, the museum’s elevation was heavily damaged. The power supply was disrupted, according to a spokesman of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA), which maintains the museum.

The VUDA authorities are taking steps to reopen the museum for visitors as soon as possible, since it is a big attraction not only for city residents, but also people from the State and the country. The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) officials are also pursuing all possibilities. It is likely to be opened only next month.

The cyclone washed away the museum’s entire premises, causing collapse of 275-metre protection wall. Trees grown along the wall crashed. Submarine parts such as torpedo control units, engine oil pooler and others, exhibited on the seaside, were displaced by gales. Electricity lines, poles, Kursura name boards and display boards vanished. The ticket-issuing counter disappeared, while computers were completely damaged. Landscape and greenery were washed away. The debris and sand floated on to the platform.

With continuous efforts, seven guides, along with security guards and maintenance staff, removed the garbage, uprooted trees and stones from the premises. Visitors are likely to be allowed after the power supply is restored and repair work is completed. The VUDA authorities are estimating the loss. A preliminary estimation of Rs 2.5 crore has been made for taking up repairs.
