Hyderabad: After months of futile efforts to sell red sanders stockpiled in depots across the State, the Andhra Pradesh government is all set to notify fresh schedule to sell 4,160 metric tonnes of red sanders through e-tender-cum-e-auction soon.

The decision has come following the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) giving his approval on Thursday to the cash-strapped State to sell red sanders. According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests AV Joseph, a notification facilitating the State government to sell the red sanders was given by the DGFT. The notification has given six months time, enabling the State to sell the red sanders till April 30, 2015.

The earlier permission for the sale of red sanders had hit a road block as it was subjected to condition of a final order by High Court of Madras, before which a writ petition had been pending since 2007. The earlier approval had also imposed a condition to the sale of red sanders by Andhra Pradesh that it was subjected to the final verdict of any other court.

Joseph said that orders of the High Court of Madras were not relevant to the proposed global tender called by government of Andhra Pradesh.

He said during the year 2006, the State had called and finalised tender for sale and export of 1240 MTs of red sanders in log form, subject to approval by the Central government under Export and Import (EXIM) policy.

Following this, the State had presented the same before the High Court of Madras that it had a onetime exemption from Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CIETS), and obtained permission from the DGFT for the sale and export of red sanders. Then, the High Court had dismissed the writ petition pending before it, Joseph added.

Senior officials of the State government had met the Union Commerce Ministry officials in September, seeking removal of the condition imposed in the earlier DGFT order. Responding positively to the State's request, the DGFT has issued fresh notification removing the condition and permitting AP to sell and export red sanders, for which the government would soon call an e-tender-cum-e-auction to sell 4,160 MTs of red sanders, he added.
