The district authorities sought the help of the Navy and four helicopters from the Eastern Naval Command were deployed to douse the fire. Officials said the fire started when devotees lit diyas near the Narayaneswara Ranganatha Swamy temple atop Gudilova hillock on the occasion of Karthika purnima on Thursday. The dry weeds caught the fire from the diyas and spread all over. The gales due to the depression in the bay spread the fire rapidly, making it a tough task for the fire services personnel to contain it.

The Minister for Panchayat Raj, Ch Ayyanna Patrudu, DIG (fire services) K Sambasiva Rao and DFO M Venkata Murali personally supervised the operations. There was no loss of life or property so far, the minister told reporters.
