A party delegation led by him met Jaitley here on Saturday and submitted a memorandum, urging him to expedite relief and succour to the cyclone-affected people.

In the memorandum, Jagan explained in detail the magnitude of damage caused by the cyclone and the trail of death and destruction it had left behind. He alleged that the State government had completely failed in addressing the issue. According to Jagan, Jaitley gave them a patient hearing and assured help to the affected people. He told them that the details about the extent of damage were yet to come. Once the reports were received, the appraisal exercise would begin and the Ministry of Finance would act immediately.

Jagan further said that he had told the Union Minister that no official had visited the affected areas and 25 kg of rice from the Rs 1-a-kg scheme was given only in some of the areas, while a majority of the villages were left high and dry. He rued that the farmers, who had lost their crops, were not even eligible for crop insurance and their situation was pathetic.
